Summary

Introducing Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith。

Celebrating the range and diversity of Penguin Classics, they take us from snowy Japan to springtime Vienna, from haunted New England to a sun-drenched Mediterranean island, and from a game of chess on the ocean to a love story on the moon。 Beautifully designed and printed, these collectible editions are bound in colourful, tactile cloth and stamped with foil。

Like his Austrian contemporary Sigmund Freud, the doctor and writer Arthur Schnitzler
was a bold pioneer in exploring the dark tangled roots of human consciousness。 His novella Dream Story tells the tale of a young married man who, after a discussion with his wife about their fantasises, experiences an eery reverie through Vienna's underbelly。

Read this in French since I'm still reading exclusively in the language until further notice but still wanted to take this on - Traumnovelle is probably best known today as the source for the Stanley Kubrick film Eyes Wide Shut and for much of the early sections of the book I found that the film drew quite closely from it outside of changed setting/period, but as it goes along the two diverge in some important ways which made this interesting in its own right。 A beautifully written evocation of Read this in French since I'm still reading exclusively in the language until further notice but still wanted to take this on - Traumnovelle is probably best known today as the source for the Stanley Kubrick film Eyes Wide Shut and for much of the early sections of the book I found that the film drew quite closely from it outside of changed setting/period, but as it goes along the two diverge in some important ways which made this interesting in its own right。 A beautifully written evocation of dreams, fidelity, desires, cities at night, and the seamy underbelly of urban life, wrapped with enough symbolism and mystery to make it worth coming back to again and again。 。。。more

Eyes wide shut! No dream is ever just a dream。 “Am I sure? Only as sure as I am that the reality of one night, let alone that of a whole lifetime, can ever be the whole truth”。“neither the reality of a single night nor even of a person’s entire life can be equated with the full truth about their innermost being”。- funny。 maybe as much as you think you know a person or even as much as they think they’ve told you, it’ll never fully be that。 There’s things we don’t really want to properly share wit Eyes wide shut! Like many, I came to this book after watching its film adaptation Eyes Wide Shut。 Despite the title, I did not find the writing to be particularly dream-like or lyrical, even compared with other continental writers I have read in translation such as Strindberg or Bulgakov。 While Kubrick plays with the division between the erotic and the clinical in the doctor's psyche, Fridolin's perspective in the novella felt just clinical。 Even more so than in the film, Schnitzler's thesis of dream being poss Like many, I came to this book after watching its film adaptation Eyes Wide Shut。 Despite the title, I did not find the writing to be particularly dream-like or lyrical, even compared with other continental writers I have read in translation such as Strindberg or Bulgakov。 While Kubrick plays with the division between the erotic and the clinical in the doctor's psyche, Fridolin's perspective in the novella felt just clinical。 Even more so than in the film, Schnitzler's thesis of dream being possibly more important than reality is bluntly stated, and with even less justification backing it up, making its protagonist feel even more like a cad。 。。。more

This was great - descriptive, weird , and personally I loved the stream of consciousness narrative - Really felt like you were experiencing the smells , the atmosphere and the dreaminess like state 。 Very dense for a novella 5⭐️I would most certainly read this again 。

“‘As sure as I am of my sense that neither the reality of a single night nor even of a persons entire life can be equated with the full truth about his innermost being’”…“‘ Never inquire into the future’” Beautiful look at Kubrick’s ‘inspiration’ (scene-for-scene source)

Book challenge, read a book under 100Pages。 This book was hardly a book and most of it didn’t make sense。

An exciting storyline, where every chapter stands for its own。 But as the cover depicts, it is all about sexuality and sex in general, which is annoying after a while。 I wasn't a huge fan of reading it, but I really enjoyed the ending。 An exciting storyline, where every chapter stands for its own。 But as the cover depicts, it is all about sexuality and sex in general, which is annoying after a while。 I wasn't a huge fan of reading it, but I really enjoyed the ending。 。。。more

Having read "Dream Story", I understood a lot from what Kubrick saw and created "Eyes wide shut"。 You almost cannot leave it from your hands and the writer creates a very intriguing story。 It is indeed a dream story which carries the reader in it。 Having read "Dream Story", I understood a lot from what Kubrick saw and created "Eyes wide shut"。 You almost cannot leave it from your hands and the writer creates a very intriguing story。 It is indeed a dream story which carries the reader in it。 。。。more
